well here are a few pics i took the other night. i need practice and a big ole ZOON!!!! i should have used a polarizer i guess. that purple flaring is on all of my moon images. this one f/2.8 1/2 sec ISO 64 apparently my cam is good about this purple flaring stuff. From what i was reading, it sounds like i should have used a polarizer. any other tips?

f/2.8 1 sec. ISO 64 i like the reflection of the Earth in this one. i would really love to take pics of the constellations. that would be so cool!

here's a pic of the moon i took during the day about a month ago. edit: f/4.5 1/250 sec. ISO 64 i kinda like this one 'cause i can see some shadows on the moon. ya know...it's not just a white blob! LOL!

finally, here are my stars. BTW, i took all the pics of nightshot pics of the moon and these stars from the parking lot at the hospital (my last monthly challenge entry). i guess it would have been better to try to shoot in a place with no lights around? f/2 20 sec. ISO 64 any feedback is appreciated!

The blue one is a fabulous picture. I got a 3" reflector telescope last year and fulfilled a lifelong ambition to see Saturns rings. Jupiter appeared like a pale disc. But the moon!!!!! I've spent ages just letting the moon move through the telescope, its like flying over the Lunar crators and mountains.

Back in December, when I was shopping for a NEW camera, I had a chance to try a PANASONIC FZ-20 camera (5 mp 12x Optical Leica-lens) I was REAL close to buying this one...the ZOOM was impressive AND it had Electronic Image Stabilization too! This is a crop of the original 2560w x 1920H image! Here's the Exif from the FZ20 image: Model : DMC-FZ20 Exposure Time : 1/80 sec Exposure Program : Manual Max Aperture Value : f/2.8 ISO Speed Ratings : 400 Focal Length : 72.0 mm L8r! Joe

My guess is that the top mood pic is just overexposed. On a clear night the proper exposure to see details on the moon surface is pretty much what you'd use here on a bright sunny day. [setting your camera on manual to f16 aperture and an exposure lenght of 1 / film speed. In other words, if you are shooting 64 ISO, set your camera for f16 with an exposure of 1/60th of a second.] Try experimenting around this, and let us know how it turns out. The Earth-shine one is really neat. Only way I know to make something like this work is to take two at different exposures, and fit them together with photoshop.

Why do alot of people say zoon? Is it just a typo that got hyped (like pwned in the gaming comunity) or did I miss something? ps. zoon means son in Dutch.

@Anthony, Thanks! sounds like you're having a wonderful time with your telescope!!!! kemal and i have ALWAYS wanted one! @Misha, i don't think i can go any higher than f/8 with my cam. i originally was gonna set it at f/8 but then was thinking with all the bright lights around, i didn't wanna let anymore light in...that it would mess up the lighting in the sky. make sense? i'm sleepy so i may not be sayin' this right. thanks a bunch! @Joe, Helluva a capture!!!!! Damn fine shot!!!! @Richard & Pascale...thanks a lot guys@ @ Rinzy...well Zoon comes from Kort! not a typo. i wondered the same thing when i saw him using it all the the time! LOL!

"try if you are shooting 64 ISO, set your camera for f16 with an exposure of 1/60th of a second" Try f/5.6 1/500 second and then experiment f/5.6 1/100 f/8 1/250 numbers may vary with camera. rounding works. the link has a nice table for other conditions. Thanks a BUNCH Misha!!!!!!! the information really helps a lot! Can you explain to me what this means: "Some equalization (stretching the brightness histogram) will help a lot. Unfortunately, it will also enhance the visible image noise." It's under the section, "post-processing" on the one of the links you gave me. I'll include the link if you want to read in more in context. thanks again, Misha!

I suspect they are talking about playing with the "Levels" adjustment in photoshop.
