I beta tested Carrara, and just thought I'd show some of the capabilities of Carrara. If anyone is interested in seeing more. My website: http://www.vizualds.com has a gallery of my images and of some sneakpeeks of Carrara Studio Pro.

I have Vue3 debated on Vue4, still thinking about Vue5. I wonder if anyone could give me major advantages to using Vue over Carrara. I'm finding the new terrain and sky editors to be up to par on scenery, and Carrara seems to be more of an all around package then Vue. I do wonder if Vue5 would actually be a benefit to my toolset. The only thing I can think of is that Vue plants tend to be smaller in size, and a bit more realistic looking without extra work. To get the quality of renders in Vue that I get in Carrara, it seems to take double the render time, has rendering speed been improved much in 4? Anyone heard about 5?

Be sure to check out http://www.eovia.com and see the pricing on Carrara Pro. The feature set is nice too. I'm all for a big toolset. I look forward to hearing everyone's feedback.

Brian

Oops. Forgot the image. One other thing, I am a bit disappointed in the video preview on the e-on site, I expected a better look at some of the features, and a bit slower so I could see the quality.

Well... the main difference I can think of is that Vue has been tuning Terrain / atmosphere editing for the past few years, whereas Carrara's terrains and atmosphere editors are really in their infancy. Sure, the new terrain editor of Carrara Pro looks good but I would like to try it myself before I can compare with Vue. I think we should delay this discussion for a few months until both Carrara 4 and Vue 5 come out and have been tested.

What about answering? To get the quality of renders in Vue that I get in Carrara, it seems to take double the render time, has rendering speed been improved much in 4? Anyone heard about 5? I find that Vue gives very Warm images easily, but that they tend to be grainy unless you crank up the settings, which is why the render times are so high, has Vue4 improved this?

That's a difficult question to answer without getting into a formal benchmark of both rendering engines. That is, we would have to create the exact same scenes in both softwares, with gradual increase in complexity, and compare the results both in rendering time and visual quality. Are you looking at scenes of equivalent complexity ? In my experience, I noticed that I tend to make more simple scenes in Carrara than in Vue because I am not used at Carrara's weird interface (at least not yet), so the rendering time is faster with Carrara but for the wrong reason. As for Vue 5, we are not at liberty to discuss the beta version until after the release :)

dito to what agiel said, hard to answer you atm :) but i can say that i do like what ive seen of carrara 4 pro, but once again, which ive said before i dont realy see carrara and vue as competitor, sure they both do some things the other does aswell but i continue to view them as companions (i might be wrong of course since neither is out yet) so as far as i can tell i think using c4 pro and v5 together would be quite nice since they both seems to still be strong @ different things.

Um. Not to be a pain, but no one has answered my question yet. To get the quality of renders in Vue that I get in Carrara, it seems to take double the render time, has rendering speed been improved much in 4? Anyone heard about 5? You obviously can't answer the second part, but I am curious if version 4 rendering speed performance has been improved.

agiel ( ) posted Mon, 27 September 2004 at 10:35 AM

I did answer that question - I said that it was difficult to estimate the rendering time difference without a formal benchmark between the two applications, to be sure to compare what is comparable. Which means - I will try to make a benchmark as soon as possible :) You will have your answer in a couple of days.

Well really I'm asking between Vue3 and Vue4, but I appreciate your feedback.

In that case, according to rendering times posted on e-on's website (under the Vue 4 section), rendering has been improved by up to 40 % in some cases.

There's no contest, Vue 3 was much slower (as that was what I started on) and the quality difference between Vue 3 and 4 renderings is substantial, I haven't touched Vue 3 since I bought Vue 4, it was a huge upgrade from version 3. Just the addition of volumetric atmospheres and materials made Vue 3 obsolete for outdoor renders.

Thanks nano and agiel. Can you give me a benchmark between Vue3 and Vue4 for the same scene? I think thats the best way to judge, I don't go by what companies say:)

Well, Carrara is known to have a fast render engine. ;)

I could confirm that when evaluating v3 about a year ago. I did however not like the interface or the jerky and unstable animation tools.
I will give Carrara a new chance when the v4 demo is released( even if I suppose that the interface is the same).

Vue 4 is significantly faster at rendering than Vue 3. I just did a benchmark test (actually using 3 different scenes). Vue 4 comes out an average of 57% faster than Vue 3 - for the three scenes.
