Subject: Newbie needs help... please

I picked up Poser 5 (no SR's yet) on 11/15 and have been reading every FAQ and tutorial I can. And downloading - yes, I've been purchasing things too... However, I am having a very basic (I think its basic anyway) problem: I cannot get 'conforming' clothes to move with the figure. An example: V3 and Stormguards pack. I apply the boots and chaps - and I 'conform to figure 1' and they fit nice and snug. Then, I begin moving figure 1 and the boots and chaps remain in place and V3 moves out of them! I am at my wits end. It seems so simple! Yet it has consumed hours and hours of my time, trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. Do I have to parent each part of the 'Chaps' (for example) to each corresponding part of V3 (Chaps thigh to V3 thigh, Chaps shins to V3 shins)? That seems too complex... or is it? Please... someone help? Much thanks in advance!!

well. First load the main figure, in this case V3. Then load one clothing item (figure). Then conform the clothing to the Figure1 (V3) When you want to move the figure, move only Figure1 (V3) See if that works... the proceed.

I came, I rendered, I'm still broke.

You say "no SR'r yet"... You should definately install SR3, it resolves a lot of issues both regarding functionality and performance. (The problem you are having is probably not related to the SR's though)

Iibernull, make sure you take "Inverse Kinematics" (IK) off. (hehehe I learned something!) They interfere with a lot of things (And I am no expert). Definitely install SR3. It's a must. :) When you pose, do you drag on arms / legs etc, or do you use the pose dials? If you go to your top menu and click Window, you get a list of windows to display, one of them is Parameter dials. That's what you need to work with when you pose things. If you pull on arms etc you'll find it's very hard to control things. I can't remember on Stormguards, but it may actually load 3 different figures for top / pants / boots. Have a look how many figures you have listed. If you only have clothing and (for example) V3, if there are 4 items listed, then you need to conform 3 of them to V3 (Figure 1 I presume) I hope that helps a bit :) Silke

Another tip. First, load the base figure. Look at the bottom of the render window and see exactly how it is identified. Write that down if neccesary. Turn off IK and drop the figure to the ground. Load your conforming item, click on 'conform to' and select the base character. Here's the gotcha; The loaded base figure is not always identified as Figure 1. If the figure is named (such as Koshini, NefGal, etc), then the clothing item can become figure 1. Put your cursor on the arrow next to the figure name under the window, right click, and you should get a list of all loaded figures in the scene. Point and click on the name of the base figure; that will ensure that this is the active object, and the parameter dials will affect only the base figure. Next tip. With experience, you -can- point and click on the figure(s) in the window, and activate the one you want, even through a conforming item. But it takes a lot of practice, and familiarity with how things are shaped. The easiest way to avoid disaster is to use the second menu under the window; the one just to the right of the figure name. This list will give you a table of all the body parts. It is tedious scrolling through them, but you can be sure that you are only selecting the parts of the active figure from there.

Everyone - thank you all so much for your quick and helpful replies. I'm especially happy no one told me to 'rtfm' (because I have! ;) I deleted the clothes in question and reloaded them, and used the suggestions given and it worked. I've no idea what I did wrong - but, given the amount of time I spent fretting with it, I must have just gotten myself in a mess and overlooked something. Anyway - Thanks!

Yeah, well we have ALL rtfm and we know it doesn't help! LOL The P5 manual in particular must take first prize for "Most unhelpful and useless manual for 3D Software In the World"
