I am considering purchasing Vue, but I have some problems with the P5 compatibility issue.

I have P4, but I am not completely familiar with the P5 to P4 to Vue process.

Tell me if I am correct about this: a .pz3 file MUST be imported into Vue directly from P4. If the .pz3 was saved in P5, then it cannot be imported into Vue.

Or, is it that only certain P5 elements cannot be imported into Vue - like dynamic hair? And that a .pz3 file CAN be imported directly from P5 to Vue - so long as the .pz3 file does not include dynamic hair?

I've seen some beautiful Vue renders. But I like using P5's dynamic hair.

Ultimately, it's my decision to buy, or not to buy, Vue. But if any of you Vue fans have some helpful advice, I would appreciate hearing from you.

I have Vue 4.12 and Poser 4 and 5. If I save a .pz3 or .pzz from Poser 5, so long as it doesn't use P5 specific stuff (P5 people, hair or dynamic clothing) those Poser 5 .pz3's and .pzz's can be imported into Vue. If you use a P5 material that wont get imported either, but then you can just apply a new material in Vue then anyway. You could always copy the P5 people to your Poser 4 install if you want to use those figures.

I should add that my P5 .pz3 and .pzz files normally use stuff from a linked P4 runtime, that's probably why they work!

I'll have to give this matter some thought -- and I'll have to take another look at the Vue gallery.

Hopefully, Vue is headed towards an update with full P5 compatibility.

Poser 5 dynamic hair is not usable by any other rendering package as far as I know. Even if you export to .obj format it doesn't work in other renderers. It's the nature of P5 hair.

Dynamic hair is a specific Poser 5 rendering effect - as far as i know. So it will be extremely difficult to bring this to any other software package. They have to integrate the same algorithm into their package. And this takes time - even depending wether (or when) Curious Labs gives the algorithm to any other company. Why don't you try the demo version of Vue and see whether it suits you?

That's correct, Raven. Anything in the P4 runtime will import into Vue, so he easiest way to deal with this is to drag the non-dynamic parts of the P5 runtime into P4. That way you can work in P5 or P4, save wherever, and Vue can still import it (the attached is H Mann's Judy++, with one of Kozaburo's hair props, posed completely in P4 and imported into Vue). The dynamic hair is actually a particle based effect (within P5, at least), so we probably won't get the hair in Vue 4. However, the dynamic cloth would be a real possibility. Most likely way would be to create the dynamic, and Vue would read and do a frame by frame mesh deformation or swap, depending on just how they manage it. And actually, for stills you can simply choose which frame of the animation of the cloth deformation you like, save that frame as a Pz3 and import. Or export the cloth piece as an .obj and take into Vue in that manner.

Well, there's always the compositing option :)
