Hi there.. I'm saving some 3ds files as vob's... All they have is vue textures, and yet when i save them as vob's, they're 3 times as big.. Anyway to minimize the size issue??

Not that I have found trad'. Hmmmm, I sure would like to see E-on reduce the file size for the next version... Although with the big announcment from E-on, concerning us lucky Cinema owners...E-on could get away with anything at the moment and I would be happy, and forgive them :o) Whoooops, sorry again Llyn...I can't help myself, from telling everbody ;o) Cheers

Thanks cheers, I was just trying ot resolve one problem, and figured that saving grouped 3ds would save some time, grouping wise, down the line... Now I guess the question in my mind is, will this create a longer render time if I have all these large vob files in the scene?

No it will not take any longer to render and if it's grouped well will actually render faster. Ya Vob files are rude size wise ay? Got to remember all the textures are saved in them too. I think there just not optimized. Every object has it's texture. Other programs also fake common shapes and Vue does not, Like say you got 1000 spheres. Lots of programs will just have one sphere and the position to draw that single one over and over again. Vue don't work like that. I saves them all indvidually reguardless of how many times the same shape is used.

Pete, I done some experiments some time ago, and found that VOB files that used image maps for textures could be up to 3x as large as it's .OBJ, 3DS original. I almost certain that Vue does not save image maps within the VOB file. One thing I will add, is that the large size of the VOB files could be why Vue does suffer from slow viewport editing... Martin

Exactly, I know it doesn't save the actual image but the texture for that image is saved inside the vob file. Like these files other than size in a way have a advantage in that cause of the way they are stored they can be shared easier and edited easier but you would think there would be a better way. I think there almost like Truespaces file format. Real close to it. I can't understand why they are so big though but it does make sence if you pick apart a obj file and see how that is stored. Vue don't store things like that which is good in a way cause you got way more control editing them and they also load 10 times faster cause there is less math to undecode them. Would be nice if they could cut it down a bit though. I think the slow viewport editing is just from the shear numbers of lines it's drawing and then at that it's drawing it 4 times. If you hide things on layers and max one window and turn down the detail a bit it's way faster.
