How do you plan to use the final image? Many ways to shrink image without losing detail. In the example below I did not shrink anything.

Actually the image was 3964 x 3962 before I uploaded it. The size changed once I uploaded it here now it is 1100.53 x 1099.97

I addressed the 2D solution, to me that is the simplest way to do it.
