I just checked that particular feature, and according to DSON settings, there is no -1 value for subdivision.  Even if you convert the figure to Poser subdivision, you will never display a value lower than zero.  However, the -1 recommendation did not appear from thin air; it was documented somewhere, a very long time ago.
