I hear ya man. I served 1968 - 1974 almost 50 years since I got out...able to keep only two promises I made to myself when I got out, 1 I'm gonna do what I'm gonna do and 2 cut my hair and Shave only when "I" want to. 
Ya man. unless you've experienced it (combat )..its not something you can explain, I served 1991 - 2001, bad year that one 2001...10 years, done my bit...was really tempting the gods, since I got out, i've always made sure i do what i want to do....mellowed a little over the years,
