You are describing exactly my work flow. I model my clothing in MD2 with material zones where I want to add thickness with a solidify modifier in Blender or with DazStudio and the Thickner plug-in. The only difference is that I export the obj with quads out of MD2....even without the thickness added, now that I think of it, I could just use a solidify modifier in Blender and add a thickness at the edges. The re UVing on something like that would be easy. Just a suggestion for an alternate version that retopos easily into quads and could be more easily rigged perhaps.
