I would like to rekindle this thread to bring new life to these forums and threads to aide in character creation. this could be a help to us all, I would think.

Good idea! But in stead focussing on different apps, i think people should focus more on shapes of their characters.  For realism or semi realism( final fantasy) shapes and secondary and tertiary shapes are very important. Also rendering in different lights, different hair and also eyebrows can totally make or ruin a character. If you model from a photo. Model what you see and not what you want to see. I know this is easier said than done but most people dont look and study.I also notice people are not paying attention to ears, the ears can really change someones appearance. Ths is La Femme, she is modeled after a scan of a young hispanic woman. What i do is, i render every step so i can compare later and also see progress. Then i add brows and a dummy hair prop to get an idea and if i am going in the right direction. You can see my progress here:
