I have seen that mentioned elsewhere also and I think it makes sense.  I'm not sure about transparencies but bump and displacement maps could benefit from changing that setting, especially where organic models are concerned.  Probably worth experimenting with.

I was thinking that it were the same rule as for the gamma factor.
