Absolutely have to set light emitter on hair otherwise the hair looks like garbage on toast. Some folks don't care and just want a quick render. Here is an example using 3 different settings on the hair. 3RT bounces. Some hair does not need SSS if it's real flat or dark but light colored layered hair needs it bad!
