As the name implicates the most common use is for sorting mail in a post office.  All mail collected during the day (postboxes, customers,...) is tossed out on this table, followed by a basic sorting and control of postage. Ah, taxing mail with insufficient postage, that was the funny part of the job. But we don't do that anymore.

 "And though the holes were rather small, they had to count them all. Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall."
