Though the WBS70 is a later 1970s-1980s type of "Plattenbau" (pre-built plates) it is still the most widespread version of this kind of building found in East Germany. Consisting of a whole range of modular parts many variations exist. The same parts were also used to build schools, shops and offices.

The earlier buildings were usually 11 floors high, the maximum height possible with this type of construction. Later on the height was reduced to 5 or 6 floors. Because they had to install an elevator if they went 1 floor higher ...

In those days they were considered luxurious offering a bathroom, running hot water and central heating. Also services such as kindergartens and shops were always nearby.
