Stuff like laces is pretty simple with spline modeling techniques, probably [extrude along path in Blender](http://www.blender.org/documentation/htmlI/x4047.html), or [Sweep](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN5pQKWEvps) in other modelers.
