not sure if you're from the u.s. jen but those ideas about the lds were running on the news widely when mit romney was in the running for president.  speculation about all this made the tale repeat more and more wildly.  also the stuff about women only being capable of entering the afterlife through their husbands. 

further reading your info about god having made all the stars and planets and worlds and stuff, it does make sense considering the time this religion arose in history.
