Okay, this new version is about as far as I've gotten.  I basically tripled up on the number of nodes so I can have more layers to work with.   I've got a picture with the older version in my gallery [ here](http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2097035) if you are interested.  It's not that great and not quite what I wanted but it kinda works.
