I've used anything glows attached to particle emitters and it works. However, if you just use a value that can go above 100 in the glow channel for the particle shader and turn the value up way hi and then get your indirect lighting set the way you want when you render, it should also work.
I'm not with my machine at the moment to try it but I don't know if it would have problems.
I've rendered fireworks this way and it's no issue.
