I usually post at around 1280 x 960 and that's just fine for me. I don't much mind big images provided there's enough detail and visual image to merit it. What gets my goat is huge images with badly artefacted compression and/or low res textures and blurry renders. Waste of time, IMO.
Preference, I guess, is anything from 1200 x 900 to 1600 x 1200.
