I'd use Carrara 5 instead of 4 because it has more polygon tools. I don't know if you've already tried Amapi for modeling, but Amapi 6 is free now from http://www.polyloop.net
Amapi 7+ is now owned by e-Frontier.
Other free choices of course are Blender and Wings3D.
