Ah.... So then the .avi happens when you start a render? That's the default render output for an animation on a windows machine. You can select "current frame" under the output tab and it will render a single frame. Sounds like what was said above is true -- somehow your poser file is coming into Carrara as an animation. Tick the current frame radio button and it'll start acting like a still scene.
