My guess is that the top mood pic is just overexposed. On a clear night the proper exposure to see details on the moon surface is pretty much what you'd use here on a bright sunny day. [setting your camera on manual to f16 aperture and an exposure lenght of 1 / film speed. In other words, if you are shooting 64 ISO, set your camera for f16 with an exposure of 1/60th of a second.] Try experimenting around this, and let us know how it turns out. The Earth-shine one is really neat. Only way I know to make something like this work is to take two at different exposures, and fit them together with photoshop.
