There's plenty of room for variety: different manufacturers, different times of manufacture, different materials, different finishes. Also they can differ quite a bit on features: Reflecting mirror? Lightbulb? Built in filters? Single magnification? Triple? Swappable lens sets? There isn't really a standard for microscopes, other than the fact they can magnify stuff and do so with some degree of clarity.
