The unstated issue with a binary format is that we (the users) can't hack. We can't trick. We can't discover. We cant write our own programs to automate file alteration and creation tasks. That would be left completely to the proprietors of the format. For some of us, the discoveries are an enjoyable aspect of the art/hobby/profession.
