Instead of trying to do it with magnets you might try using a transparency map in which the spikes are transparent. On my web site I have a picture of a woman riding a dragon in which I used a transparency map to remove the spikes from his back. You can see the picture at http://members.aol.com/ljcpics2/drgnrdr.jpg
