Why use the hierarchy editor? Just click on the part of the clothes covering the invisible bodypart and then select the base figure from the drop-down menu below the display. If you select the right shoulder of a shirt that's conformed to a figure, just select the name of the figure from the list and it will automatically have its (invisible) right shoulder selected for you to pose.
