Carrara2 and Amapi work great together. In fact, there is a plug-in that allows importing Amapi geometery seamlessly. Then, if you need to change the geometery, (like some NURBS changes) you do that in Amapi and then you click an update button in C2. Pretty slick. My understanding is that there will be an update of the Amapi plug-in for Carrara3 but I haven't seen or played with it. Amapi 7.03 has been pretty stable on my system which is very similar to yours.
