Instead of a white light, you might try giving it a *slight yellow color, with a very dim fill light in a different color. Also, you might try to find a texture that has a weave or something to it, and use it as a very faint bump map on the shirts -- part of the cartoony look is that the figures and clothes are too smooth, I think. But I like the concept, I think you have a great start :-)
