New Sample Cache Architecture Speeds Up Rendering

Ever since the first Filter Forge release 10 years ago we have been reprimanded for slow rendering. Unfortunately our renderer architecture is not very suitable for speed improvements – this is a downside of storing filters in an open XML format that allows every user to look at the internals of a filter and quickly modify it for their purpose. Well, things have improved a bit.

In Filter Forge 7 we overhauled the renderer, particularly the logic of sampling and sample caches. Our original sample cache architecture didn’t take into account cases where a single component was used in multiple filter subtrees: every time the sample function of a component was called from a different subtree, the cache was invalidated. Filter Forge 7 takes a different approach: all samples are preserved in separate bins, which eliminates the need to re-calculate the sample which has been already requested before.

Instant Component Search

What category is my Wind Blur component in? Or maybe it is called Motion Blur? If you ever felt confused trying to add a component to Filter Editor, you’d love the new improvement in Filter Forge 7 – instant search throughout the entire list of components, conveniently located right at the top of Components Bar.

Component search gives you results as you type, is case-insensitive, and recognizes any letter combination or even single letters in component names. Results of the last search are displayed in the Search Results category.

Mappable Lists and Sliders

The previous Filter Forge version started the trend to update old components, and Filter Forge 7 follows suit. It updates 50 existing components by making their list and slider inputs mappable. This gives filter authors more flexibility by allowing parameter mapping, the foundational principle of Filter Forge, to be applied to list and slider inputs.

Copy / Paste

Filter Forge 7.0 adds support for copying and pasting images that allows you to use Filter Forge together with any image editor regardless of its support for plugins.

New Approach to Channels

Thanks to the recent renderer rewrite, Filter Forge 7 brings in the ability to generate all render channels simultaneously and in parallel with the final image. You can now preview the channels being rendered and quickly switch between them without restarting rendering.

Easy Export

The new Export dialog implements the long-awaited option to export multiple render channels at once. You can select specific images for export and fine-tune their export settings.
