Where Renderosity Starts - Deecey

On May 15, veteran creator Deecey, a.k.a., Denise Tyler, with help from fellow vendor Nerd3D, will launch a new figure specifically designed for Poser 11.

Deecey started working on this newest product, a toon named Maisie, after a reorganization at Smith Micro, Poser’s parent company.

“I know that Poser users have been wanting and needing a new figure to spark their creativity, one that would use weight mapping and bend beautifully and be easy to work with,” the Connecticut-Based designer said.

After working through some tutorials and studying some toon figures, Maisie began to take shape. Then she did some “Nerd arm twisting” and he helped refine the figure and did the rigging and weight mapping.

In the end, the pair created a figure who “poses like a dream” and is “super easy to develop content for,” Deecey said.

For the past few months, some of Renderosity’s top vendors have been collaborating to create add ons to make Maisie easy to work with right from her launch. There will be more than 40 products approved for Maisie’s release. And Renderosity’s staff is putting the finishing touches on bundles and a contest before the May 15 release.

In the meantime, Deecey took some time to talk about Maisie and what inspired the new toon.

What inspires your creations?

Deecey: So many things! I love historical fiction and fantasy movies, and I also love Disney and Pixar movies. One of my first ambitions when I was in high school was to be an art teacher, another one a fashion designer. So I’ll also have to admit that some of my inspiration has come from a couple of guilty pleasures … “America’s Next Top Model” and “Say Yes to the Dress.”  Can I hide now after saying that?

What is your favorite thing to design?

Deecey: I love historical and fantasy fashion, especially medieval era clothing. I tend to go more for “period” pieces more than anything, I think. But now since Maisie is on my plate I am having a LOT of fun with clothing that has a toon or anime flair to it. I will probably stick to this for quite a while now because I find that there is no limit to creativity when you are working on a toon figure!

Say Hello to Maisie

Tell us more about Maisie.

Deecey: Maisie was born from another “career change” after Smith Micro went through a major reorganization. Enough said about that. ;-) After suffering some intense head spinning for a couple of weeks, I went back to that Chumbawamba principle of picking myself up again. Never gonna keep me down!

I know that Poser users have been wanting and needing a new figure to spark their creativity, one that would use weight mapping and bend beautifully and be easy to work with. I also didn’t want to step on the toes of those who are presently creating other realistic figures for Poser.  So after pondering which direction to take, I started Maisie mostly as an attempt to do something unique and different. I found some old edge flow and character modeling tutorials, studied different toon figures out there to get some ideas, and started modeling. Eventually this curvy little big eyed cutie started appearing in my workspace. I sent some preliminary t-pose renders to Nerd and Teyon and asked, “What do you think? Should I finish her?”  They said “Go for it.”

I can rig clothing, but the thought of rigging and weight mapping a completely new and original figure gave me the willies. So I did some Nerd arm twisting (it didn’t take much, he was game right from the start). Together we tweaked Maisie’s shape just a tad from her original prototype shape, and off we went to the races. And there was a lot of chuckling between us while we worked on her face.  It was thrilling to see Nerd’s excellent rigging make Maisie come alive, especially the face controls. She is EXTREMELY expressive, and fun to work with, and poses like a dream. She’s also super easy to develop content for because she has no JCM’s, and the only “ghost bones” she has in addition to all the face controls are in the breast and buttocks.

After we completed about 98 percent of the rigging, I sent some preliminary renders to Jenn. The rest is history. Being a toon fan, I could hear the squees all the way here! She rallied a whole bunch of very talented content creators behind her, and it has been a pleasure and a thrill to see all the amazing stuff they have come up with in the process. A big huge THANK YOU to Jenn Blake, Renderosity, and the many talented content creators who have shared in the release with us.  It has been – and I hope continues to be – awesome!

She’s a lot of fun, and uses Poser 11 features to the fullest. Poser 11 is recommended for use with Maisie, but she will also work in Poser 10 with some feature limitations that are explained in the readme.

How long have you been designing and why did you start?

Deecey: Wow … believe it or not, I used to be a temperature control engineer. Yes, I know, it’s an odd job for someone with an artistic background. But I was put on disability leave after having neck surgery (I was nearly paralyzed from the neck down. It was icky).

I was forced to make a career change. I live by the Chumbawamba principle. “I get knocked down, but I get up again. You ain’t never gonna keep me down!”

I saw that 3D was “the wave of the future” and got some assistance in getting things started for me in that direction.  I’ve been working from home since 1993, doing technical writing and content creation.

I started using Poser back when it was released in 1995, and loved it right from the start. I joined the Poser community in 2000 after a company that I worked for had a substantial layoff. I drowned my sorrows in Poser to keep my spirits up. I found Renderosity and joined in April 2000, starting out as a texture artist. Then I graduated to morphs and clothing creation after that.  And now … a new toon figure (Maisie), created in partnership with Nerd3D.

What is your favorite software to create with?

Deecey: Modo, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, Unfold 3D, Photoshop, Quixel Suite

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Deecey: According to my mom, my dad taught me how to write the alphabet by the time I was two and a half. And if you look at the photo you’ll see I was into coloring books at around that age too. I was destined to be a tech writer and artist!
