Chat in a Flash!

...Or is that Flash in a Chat? Ahh...nevermind...We now have FlashChat! Yes, that's right. We now have a new and improved chat experience for everyone!

One of the popular requests on our annual Community Survey has been for an updated Chat area. Over the past few weeks we have been trying out several different chat programs and found one that we think will provide a lot more functionality and fun for all of us. Thanks to community feedback we are pleased to open the doors to our latest new feature...FlashChat!

Here's how it works:

From the chat link, you will get the login screen, where you will have to provide your username and password. But, the best part is that you can check to see who's in chat first!

And here we go....

There are also plenty of options for a great chat experience:

You can further customize sounds:

And, of course, there are plenty of emoticons!

Greetings, greetings, one and all!
2007 doesn't start with a crawl
"No way!", you may say,
but don't take our word for it,
try FlashChat today!

I'm scared to chat.People might be mean like they are in the forums...Bwhahahahahahah!!! Looks pretty darn cool to me I might have to try it out. It may make me into a chat room person since I've never really been drawn to chat rooms before.

Super, I tried it out and I like it. However, it seems a little bit like jumping the gun. There is no "How To" or FAQ. The ? or Help on the Chat screen seems more for programming and I wonder if it should even be there. Maybe I'm dumb, but I think is is for programming. I couldn't really understand it very well. I have questions, but no answers. 1. Are copies of public and private logs maintained and where, on user's computer HD, at RR? 2. Can one hide their presence? It would be nice not to make others feel bad if they are not able to contact someone who appears in the chat room, even if listed as busy. 3. Can one select which sounds are heard? It is confusing hearing all the sounds. 4. I looks like there is voice chat and video capabilities. Are these functional on the RR chat system? 5. Can more rooms be added for groups with different special interests, ie. different forums? 6. How do you invite someone to a private chat? Other than on the main screen. Please add a user friendly Help! Some of us are not as fast, sharp or experienced as others, not to mention we have different languages that require some additional time. Thanks you, Suzanne

Awesome, am assuming you would use Flash Communication Server for it? If I may recommend can we change the color scheme of the application please?

Took a peek, love it--will be fun to chat in real time as apposed to using the site mail. I see the question is posted above and I would like to ask it as well, will there be more "spaces" than the few you have listed? For myself, having a Fractal area and chatting with the many artists as they post would be fantastic!

I've tried this else where and it just eats up my ram in no time. You would think that 2 gigs is enough not with is Flash thing. I type a reply and RAM goes to nil. Get rid of it ! It's a no go !

BigRedKane ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 24 January 2007

Well...I don't think much of the flash chat, it don't even work. All I get is the blue background. :-/

VbSparky ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 24 January 2007

Yeah, it has some teething troubles. but it's still pretty new. It's a step in the right direction though. But using a java front end on an IRC channel would have been really cool.

If there of you who want to be able to chat all the time, but not run the chat in your browser, there is a 3rd party solution that's available for free. The main advantage of it (to me) is that it takes less resources than a browser, it sits in the system tray all the time for when you need it and I'm less likely to click the wrong thing and close it down. You can check out their website here http://www.kadobytes.com/fcclient/ the ZIP file includes pretty easy instructions (I got up and running in a few minutes). I'm guessing it's only a Windows version.
