Each month the Renderosity community votes on the Renderosity Artist Of The Month [AOM] ... February's AOM is Chris Wilson [chris_rw]!

We congratulate Chris for an outstanding collection of works in the 3ds Max Gallery!

Who is 'chris_rw'?

I'm Chris Wilson, a film and animation director for the US. I've been a user of Renderosity for as long as I've been doing digital artwork.

How long have you been working in digital art?

I started doing 3D over ten years ago. The first project that I did in 3D was my first animated film 'The Adventures of Nerm and BG.' Now all these years later, I'm working to finish up the sequel to that old project.

Obviously, looking at your gallery, you are still hard at work on the Chronicles of Nerm. How is this film coming along?

The film is coming along really well. I'm very happy with how the project is looking, it's exceeded all of my expectations of when I first set out to start it. The project has grown a lot, to the point that I even have a cast of celebrities doing the voice work!

Since coming back to the project after finishing up James vs Reality, I've made a lot of great progress and I'm hoping to get Nerm finished up in the next year or two. You can see an older trailer for the film here:

What can you tell us about your other project, James vs Reality?

James vs Reality was the first live-action film that I directed. It's about an escaped mental patient who fights crime, then eventually encounters an alien invasion as is forced to save the world! Aside from the modelling of a creature in the film, I took on many roles in production; from writing and directing, editing, sound and music, as well as doing all of the visual effects.

The whole project was a lot of work. I spent over two years working on it and I was surprised at how challenging everything was. A lot of skill sets translated over from my 3D work, but certainly not everything. There were many months where we failing more than succeeding in the production! But in the end, I learned a lot and had a blast doing it. It's not every day you get to go out on the city streets and shoot an alien-monster movie!

What is in your digital toolset and why?

I use 3D Studio Max, mainly because it's very user friendly.

What do you think your best piece of work is and why?

There are several renders from The Chronicles of Nerm that I've put in my gallery in the past few months that I'm very proud of. They're all renders from footage in the film and I'm ecstatic on how far the look of the film has come, especially in the past two or three months!

Who, or what, inspires you?

I've always found a lot of inspiration in movies, which is why I went into this career. I find myself drawing upon the movies that I enjoy quite frequently. Aside from that, there are a huge amount of talented artists in the 3D community that are incredibly inspiring.

What do you enjoy most about 3ds Max?

It's fairly easy to use, and has a pretty fast workflow.

Do you have any tips you would be willing to share on the software?

The biggest asset you can have with 3D work is persistence. It takes a long time to learn digital art programs and the actual work on a project can take weeks, months or years. Don't give up and keep at it!

How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

I always find it inspiring to see what others are doing in the 3D community. There are a ton of insanely talented artists out there that are working on a lot of really great projects. You can also learn a lot by looking at others' work and trying to see how they might have constructed it, how it was lit, etc.

Do you have any parting comments, or advice for other artists?

I appreciate everyone viewing my work and I'm happy that people seem to enjoy it! Keep making art!

Artist of the Month is highlighting a talented Renderosity artist that has been nominated by mods and admins, and voted by the community. Recognition is given to this member for their collection of works for that year.

Since we only select one AOM per month, it is not about their works for that particular month. Instead, it is about highlighting a talented artist's works for that year, and they are recognized during that month.
