SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 – Featured Speakers
At SIGGRAPH Asia 2011, Featured Speakers will offer insights to ground-breaking areas in the field of computer graphics and interactive techniques. SIGGRAPH Asia Featured Speakers have traditionally been pioneers in their respective area.
This year, we have two notable academic and industry heavyweights as our Featured Speakers at the SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 conference in Hong Kong - Ken Perlin and Bill Buxton - both of whom will share their invaluable expertise with conference attendees.
Ken
Perlin
Professor
Department of Computer Science at New York University
About Ken Perlin
Widely respected and emulated for his Academy Award-winning work in
noise and turbulence procedural texturing techniques, which are
used in feature films and television today, and recipient of the
2008 ACM SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award, Ken Perlin
is deemed as one of the industry’s top innovators.

The Future of Computer Graphics
The interface between people and computers is evolving at an ever
accelerating pace. In another ten years this interface will be
radically different, and in twenty years it will be utterly
transformed.
At some point our SmartPhones are likely to become obsolete, as advancing technology allows us simply to perceive the world around us a ubiquitous and seamlessly integrated augmented reality.
Once this future has been achieved, what will we do with it? What will it mean to be a social human? Based on current trends and a little inspired guesswork, we look at the implications for identity, privacy, education, culture and the arts, economics, politics and the digital divide.

Bill Buxton
Principal Researcher
Microsoft Research
About Bill Buxton
With over 30 years of involvement in research, design and
commentary around the human aspects of technology, Bill Buxton is a
well-known name in the industry. Recipient of the 2008 ACM/SIGCHI
Lifetime Achievement Award for fundamental contributions to the
field of human-computer interaction, Bill Buxton will offer
attendees valuable insights to the industry.

More than what the Eye Sees: Interaction and
Graphics
As the glitz and glamour of the animations and images populate the
Electronic Theatre, it is easy to forget that SIGGRAPH stands for,
“The ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and
Interactive Techniquesâ€. Before SIGCHI and other forums
matured, SIGGRAPH was where one went to present and see the most
innovative interaction, graphics, and techniques. But the emphasis
has changed, as graphics and interaction have both matured.
As the fields become more specialized, it can be argued that this is all for good reason – and that may be true. However, in retrospect, is this reason good enough?
In this talk, we will look back and forward, use examples to illustrate how rich the combined history of interaction and graphics is, as well as the potential and need to reconsider the existing balance between the two in the future.
