November 2012 Artist of the Month - DOM1

Each month the Renderosity community votes on the Renderosity Artist Of The Month [AOM] ... November's AOM is DOM1!

We congratulate DOM1 for an outstanding collection of works in the Vue Gallery!

Who is 'DOM1' ?

My name is Dominic, or Dom for short, and I live in the U.K. As well as being a digital artist, I also work as a picture editor for several websites. Although most of my time is spent creating art for various products, such as posters, jigsaw puzzles and other items. I recently saw a puzzle in a shop in my local town, which featured some of my artwork, which was great to see.

How long have you been working in digital art?

It really started about six years ago, when I came across a showreel of Vue as a 3d application. I just had to get a copy and see if it was capable of producing such great scenery. Luckily, it really was able to produce what it claimed and I have never looked back.

Victorian Garden

Do you have any traditional art experience?

I have studied art at college, and from the age of five was always making doodles or caricatures of famous people. So, I have always had a creative side to me. Marrying traditonal art skills and computers was always a natural progression for me.

Winter In North Antwerp

What are you currently working on?

I am just finishing a scene which includes the famous Romeo and Juliet courtyard in Verona. The model itself was created by Don Webster, and I have used Vue to add flowers, lighting and various other objects.

What software is in your digital toolset and why?

Apart from Vue, I use Photosop CS5, Poser Pro, and Painter X. Poser is great for importing human figures and models from Daz3d, and Painter is great for adding natural looking brush effects and blending. But Photoshop is the second most important tool after Vue, because as good as Vue is, it still doesn't have the range of postwork adjustments needed to complete a finished picture. When a render is completed in Vue there will usually always be small areas that need fixing or tidying up, or parts that don't look natural.

Village in Winter

What do you think your best piece of work is and why?

I think 'Village in Winter,' because although the scene doesn't contain many objects, getting the snow to look real was quite a challenge. The basic landscape was created in Vue, but I spent quite a long time painting over it, to get the textures and lighting looking as real as possible.

Who, or what, inspires you?

Because I mostly create outdoor/rural scenes, I'm inspired by outdoor artists. These range from the classic artists such as Koekkoek and Constable, to more modern day painters such as Terry Redlin, Charles White and Jesse Barnes. I also get inspired by great outdoor Photography, whether it's a sunset over a coastline or the colours of an autumn forest.

Forever Autumn

What do you enjoy most about Vue?

Vue is great for beginners or experts, and is easy to get started with because the layout/interface is easy to use, compared to other 3d applications. Yet, it has very powerful functions and editing abilities. The best and most important part for me is the Atmosphere editor, because without the best lighting adjustments, a scene just wont look as good as it should be, no matter what the subject matter. To me it's like creating a portrait and not getting the eyes looking right.

Do you have any tips you would be willing to share on the software?

I have written some detailed tutorials for magazines such as '3D Artist' issues 9 to 14, which should still be available to download. I would also say make sure you have plenty of memory when using Vue and always, always back up everything you do.

Midwinter Sunset

How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

Renderosity was the very first online gallery I uploaded to. The feedback I got from those early scenes, encouraged me to continue creating 3d work. Ever since then I have tried to make each new scene as good, if not better than the last. I have also made some good friends, such as the aforementioned Don Webster and Mercedes Keyes, who I created an image for a book cover. I also got noticed on Renderosity by a magazine editor and a licensing agent. So, the exposure has been invaluable.

Do you have any parting comments, or advice for other artists?

Finally, I would like to thank to everyone out there who voted for me, and good luck in whatever project you are in the middle of.

We invite you to have a further look at DOM1's Renderosity Gallery, while we await the interview!
