So, tell us a bit about your new tutorial set, Poser from Beginner to Advanced.
John: In the tutorials we cover all sorts of subjects, some for beginners through to more advanced users. We really wanted to do something for everyone and especially to have something that someone who has never used Poser before could use to get going quickly.
With that in mind we have a quick start section, which goes through the main concepts in Poser while building a simple scene. Something for someone who has just installed Poser and wants to get going real quick.
Saying that, we also wanted to cover some more complex subjects, so there is plenty in there that even seasoned users will get something out of.
What all is covered in each tutorial?
John: As well as the Quick Start, we cover each room from the Pose Room to the Setup Room. Covering all kinds of concepts and processes from the basics to more advanced topics. Stephanie and I went through a long list of subjects and divided them up according to our strengths:
And so on... As well as half a dozen miscellaneous quick tips and tricks that we couldn't fit into any particular category.
What made you decide to work on these tutorials together?
John: As I said, we both have our strengths, I'm more technical and Stephanie is an amazing artist. I can deal with and explain the more technical aspects of Poser quite well, but Stephanie makes it sing. So, between us we make a great team, I can make things work and Stephanie can make them look awesome.
After viewing some clips of your Poser from Beginner to Advanced tutorial set, I was quite impressed. The instruction is very clear, easy to follow along and puts you right at ease in learning the software. What made you decide the time was right for this offering?
Stephanie: I continually ask myself, "What's missing?" And what I'm really looking for is anything that can make using Poser more pleasant for the artist. I think some of my current items reflect that. For example, I made OVERHAUL because I found that the joints weren't smoothing, and I thought that was missing. I made Squish morphs because I felt that V4 needed to have more soft body abilities. In this case I get lots of emails, as does Fugazi (John), asking questions about usage.
So, we felt that it was time to tackle a project as large as this. It was just missing from the community. Don't get me wrong, I've seen other tutorials, but we just felt that we could make this truly tailored to both the average and advanced user so that it was a truly complete package. I know that was long winded, but it was genuine.
Tell us a bit about your own experiences in learning Poser and what you address in your tutorials that you wish you might have learned when you started out?
Stephanie: It was piecemeal and frustrating. I did read the manual, but let's face it - that's a lot of reading and by the time you get to the end, you surely won't remember all that you've read. Besides, if I didn't really understand something in the manual, there was no one there to explain it. I had to scour the forums and pray my questions got answered. Had there been a video series as complete as this at the time, it would've saved me months, no - years in some cases, of searching.
If I had to pick something I wished I had learned when I first started out, I couldn't... but I can give some examples. I wished I knew that having my Texture Filtering on the Image Map node set to None instead of Quality produced clearer images, but when patterns were involved, you really needed it on. I also wished I knew that when geometry was showing through, it was sometimes caused by a specific setting on IBL lighting. Things like that could have greatly improved my work and saved me troubleshooting time.
What plans might you have for future tutorials?
John: As a team we are looking at making some more Poser tutorials, such as a master class and some things to support content creators.
