Creating your Ground Plane

Note: Any shortcut keys mentioned here are case-sensitive. So "a" and "A" will not do the same things.
--------
During this tutorial I will try to show you as best as I can how to make grass. Along the way though, I will also be showing you a number of techniques that I use to make my life easier and which will hopefully be of help to you. So let's start!
--------

First we will create our flat and ugly ground plane, so let's go ahead and load Modeller. Select [Box] from the "Create" tab, or press "X". Now press "n". This will bring up the Numeric panel.
Enter the values I have highlighted for you.

Dimensions
Width: 50m
Depth: 50m

Segments
X: 50
Z: 50

It will give you a fairly detailed square. Press enter and then space to accept the values and create the square. Squares don't bend best though, so let's go and add some more detail to our Ground Plane.

I am going to give this a shot this weekend as I have just purchased and received Version 9 of LightWave. As a landscape artist, this is just what I was looking for and seems to be easy enough to build on for furture landscapes! Thanks SO Much for Your Time and Effort, Thelby Friday April 13, 2007

Well, this is what I call a great tutorial! I was always afraid of grass in scene :o> Sasquatch could be used for hair as well, am I right? One more thing, what about blurring the near leaves? I tried it using Digital Confusion postfilter but with no succes, it looked... weird. And using DoF su***... However, once again thanx alot!

There's a small bug in this tut: the octave param in the textured displacement should be set to 5.0 and NOT to 0.5- have a look at the screenshot- the param is correct in there- but not in the text. Maybe that's why some people had problems with their modelz. But it's still a stunning tutorial.

THANK YOU! Your tutorial taught me a lot of new things about lightwave. Even though my patch of grass looked like nasty wrinkled furry skin and the program crashed twice it was fun to give it a try. Great tutorial!
