Step 3 - Just Add Water

Now we are ready to add to start smoothing out those skin tones.

The tool I used for this is "Blender - Just Add Water". The size brush varies depending on how large your image is. The opacity setting I used through most of this skin smoothing was 23%. The larger your opacity setting the more water it will add. Be careful because if your setting is to high it will cause the paint to thin too much. With the "Just Add Water" start blending all the color together till the desired result is aquired. I have a tendency to want a cross between a painted look to more of a realistic one. Again this will vary depending on your taste. Just have fun!!

This tutorial is bloody fantastic...it's inspired me to get back to working with 'paints' on the computer and work harder for the detail I seemed to miss before...thank you so much!

Awww, thanks! That's the biggest reward...knowing that I've inspired someone and that this tutorial has helped in some way! Thank you Vampi for your wonderful words! ~Mel

wow that is so well done! I'm also inspired to try your method of shading...it seems to be the added detail I've been looking for! Is it possible to get similar results using just photoshop?

Hi Rogmog! Thanks for the comment! As for getting the same type results in Photoshop, yes it is possible, the tools are different, but technique I'm sure the same. I'm an avid photoshoper, however painter seems to work much better for me when painting. Thanks again and any further questions, please feel free to e-mail me. :)

Thank you so much for this tutorial, it inspired me to try harder to draw with Painter. I'm not as talented as you but I love to paint with the computer :)

I'm just starting out with Painter, and your tutorial is the most helpful one I've found anywhere so far! Can't wait till the full tutorial is available in Marketplace! One question I don't see addressed anywhere: are you zooming in a lot to paint the details? How do you deal with such a small "canvas" (the computer screen)? Traditional media artists want to know! Thank you!!

I have to thank you with all my forces. Now I will have more go at Painter that I so far underused due to my unability with it. Thank you. This tutorial is awesome.

Congratulations! This tutorial is very interesting. If you compare with traditional paint like oil paint, It´s a different way to paint. Excellent job.
Do you use a Wacom Or Mouse for details?
I will wait your next work.

I just found this site and have been working with Painter since version 4. I upgraded to Painter 8 recently from 6.1 and am so happy the interface is much more like Photoshop.
Using the right tools in painter is half the battle and I'm glad you mentioned you use the pen and just water for blending! A wonderful tutorial. :-))

Absolutely knocked out. I'm totally inexperienced in computer graphics and still trying to find a way in, so your tutorial has been an great opener. The staring eyes bug me a little; could you have watered the down a trifle, or did you want them that way?

Thanks for the tutorial! I haven't been using the layers to their best advantage but after seeing your work I will certainly use them more! :O)

Great tutorial! The cloth looks so incredibly great that would not have thought this could have been turned out with Painter ... you really showed in a very impressive way the true potential of the programme, and yout tutorial is easy to read and also easy to understand. Very good!
