Introduction

This tutorial focuses on the creation of the various maps in Photoshop (or other similar image editor) for use in the Poser Material System. Specifically if you use layers and layer groups when creating your assets you will make life a lot easier on yourself and your textures will turn out much better.

Great stuff - very informative and easy to understand. I have one question, though. I didn't know about Poser being able to handle an illumination map? Can you expand please? Thanks for a very useful tutorial.

Yeah took me a while to figure out too :) In Poser it isn't called illumination it is the ambient color and ambient value node. This is set at 0 by default so you will want to set it to anything above this depending on how bright you want your illuminated surface. Plugging a black and white map into the Ambient value node will control the areas that are illuminated.

It's amazing what a complex scene you've made using a simple model and these maps! Thanks for the tutorial. More tutorials like this would be very helpful.

Excellent tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to teach us.

Shows very well how good (and well planned) textures can transform a simple model into something amazing!

Great tut! Yes lets see more on nodes creation!

Thanks I learned a lot from this but it was maybe a bit hard to learn from it .... sometimes your text does not match your labels in the illustrations.... for instance on page 8 your text mentions the words "color map" and "bump map" but the illustration shows a "diffuse" map, and I am not even sure if you are showing the bump map in the illustration. Love the tut, I just am not EXACTLY sure if I am seeing what you are trying to show me, because the terminology does not match in the text and illustrations

I will go back through and try to fix those occurences. Part of the problem is the fact that there are so many terms and they are often misused.

Great tutorial. I'd certainly like to see one on putting the maps into Poser and setting up the nodes. I received your 3D Game Textures book for Christmas and am working my way through it now!

This is some wonderful sunshine lighting the way. Yes! we would absolutely like more.

Good tutorial. I would like to see a tutorial (or just a screen shot) showing how these maps are used in the Poser Material Room.

Thank you Mr. Ahearn!
I have 2 of your books, and it is a treat to get a freebie like this from you.
Id like to say that your tips increase visual quality AND speed up rendering at the same time.
These techniques will improve any type of rendering.
