Previewing lighting and shadows
Maya 2011 Lighting and Rendering in mental ray with Eric Keller shows how to master practical mental ray techniques for rendering models created in Maya. This course walks through the most efficient and innovative mental ray techniques, including direct versus indirect lighting methods, creating different types of shadows, using the new ShadowMap camera, and reusing shadow and final gathering maps. A chapter on optimizing render times and enhancing render quality is also included.

Maya Mental Ray Caustics Tutorial
Alright, after so much anticipation of creating a lighting tutorial in Maya, I'm back with a proper and easily understandable video lesson regarding the advanced lighting concepts of Caustics. The Video lesson is about 20 minutes and contains the understanding of the Maya's Mental Ray system shaders and ligthing techniques. Caustic effect is a very important and a remarkable effect which is very much required in creating realistic looking glass effects.I'm Prantic and i'll be your instructor throughout the whole video. The Topics in the video can be categorized as follows:1. Intro: Discussing "what is caustics?" with examples2. Creating basic caustic effect using Maya's own default material nodes3. Discussing about Photon transmission, GI/Caustics4. Creating Caustics with Mental Ray materials5. Ways and Tips to make Renders times faster6. Conclusion: Showing mental ray renders with properties and Photon Map Visualizer.A photon map is a technique to generate the indirect illumination effects of caustics and global illumination when you render with the mental ray renderer. When it calculates indirect illumination, the mental ray renderer traces photons emitted from a light. The photon is traced through the scene, being reflected or transmitted by objects, until it strikes a diffuse surface. When it strikes a surface, the photon is stored in the photon map.
