Castle Neurathen again!
The tourist´s interest at this place here is the "Bastei Bridge", that guide us very comfortable and safe into this world of pilars and deep clefts without a risk. From the Bastei Bridge there are small steel bridges on top of many pilars - with spectacular views!
Without the castle`s open air museum of today most of the visitors never ever noticed that this place could be a castle. Nothing survived: The wooden superstructures - gone with fire, the rain, bacterias and the wind of time. The cistern: Dry without the raining water from the building roofs, filled with dirt, humus soils and covered with trees. Forgotten, a legend....
Only a few things survived: Some holes in the rocks to fix the wooden superstructures, some fragments of stone walls.
This pic here shows one of the rare fragments: The stone circle in the foreground is the base of an old watchtower. The tower was a wooden construction and was linked over a woodenn bridge with my POV.
The rock formation in the middle is called "THE MONK" and was although part of the defence system of castle Neurathen. What looks as a human figure on top is an iron construction in the shape of an ancient monk; it is a very important landmark for geodetic science of today.
The MONK was the first rock pilar here that was climbed by humans in modern times; the whole region here is a paradise for climbers and the Saxonian Switzerland is a very fine training ground - at summers day you can watch climbers directly from the BASTEI BRIDGE with a little luck.
There are a lot of rules for climbing here: It is a National Park with rare animals like eagles, so some areas are strictly forbidden for climbers, "technical climbing" (with a lot of technical supplies) is generally forbidden; climbing the pilars of castle Neurathen is strictly taboo, but they can climb every rock in the direct surrounding of the Bastei Bridge.
Hope you enjoy and thanks for your interest and the nice comments!
