Smile: Variations on a Theme

Say cheese!
Impossible to get an honest portrait
When everyone is trained
To grin from ear to ear

My five-year-old twin grandsons
Know they'll have their picture taken
As soon as they get to the top of the slide
All the way up they're yelling,
Cheese! Cheese!

The other day
A Condescending Old Fart
Provided unsolicited advice

Rather than giving an
Honest response
I was condescending in return
In the end
I smiled my best smile
And said,
"But THANK you!"

I should have just walked away
The minute he opened his mouth
And I knew what was up

Men don't seem to smile
Unless they want you to
Buy their bullshit
Snake oil sales
Trading smiles for sex

If you believe him
You'll do
He asks you to do

Are taught to smile
No matter what

Don't hurt anyone's feelings
Be nice
If you have to say no
At least smile
To soften the blow

Those who learn it best
Do well in customer service

Can be such a mixed message

No wonder nobody knows
What Mona Lisa was up to

My husband smiles at me

The smile reaches his eyes
Touches my heart
I'm in the right place

And makes me smile

From what I've read so far, you are so right and it is hard not to smile with wry amusement at that statement.

Smile at your enemies - it will make them wonder what you're up to!

Lets see if this works. I've attempted to post this comment 3 times now, and each time, internet crashed.

OK: Where what did I actually say. Oh yeah: smiles are such a complicated topic. They mean so many things and many of them are contradictory. Smiles when they're forced, or otherwise unnecessarily coaxed out of a smiler are...well...strange. I love how this underscores that. There are so many different kinds of smiles out there, and the only ones that so many people seem interested in are those cunning lies that mask a whole, vast number of things that aren't right. Odd how that works. I love your observations here, and the wonderful wit. This makes me smile.

You have the options of smiles well lit. So I ask the people with my street shots NOT before. To a genuine portrait, situation, emotion to capture.
If a smile comes from the heart, it reaches your heart be also. And you know, it's honest!
Wonderfully written, Tara!

Smile in the face of adversity, a lesson hard learned by many.

Well, in about three weeks I'll be going back on night shift, so learning to smile would probably benefit me a lot! Hard to do on that shift, though...

A fun variation on the smile theme, Tara!

You are such a lucky lady. And, I think, Bill is a lucky man. Your words are spot on. It makes me think of one of my most precious things, the smile on my friend's face when she sees me followed by a hug. It doesn't get much better than that.
