The constable called for a car to come and Altayr stayed to make sure Diego didn't come to and cause any more trouble. The kitchen knife was put in an evidence bag. "We will need you to come and make for us a statement, senor. Tomorrow is fine, if you can," he said as he closed the back door to the car. Diego was still out cold on the back seat, his hands cuffed behind him.

Altayr took off for Sancha's place and met Marco at the door. Marco looked haggard and sad. He was drinking a beer on the bench on the porch. "Is she...? Is she alright?"

"She's been better, my son," he grimaced. "They fought and he tied her to the bed posts, then gagged her so she could not call for help. He give her a black eye. She has stitches. The doctor - my friend - he is upstairs with her. Nothing that will not heal in time, except perhaps her heart. Maybe...." Marco cast Altayr an odd look then. "You know, after how he has been for the last months, she only stay with him because she is afraid of him. Sancha does not love Marco - not for many months now." Marco waved at him to go up the stairs, tossing his arm in the air and his hand backward. "Go. Go an' take care of her. I am going home."

The doctor was just closing the door to the bedroom as Altayr came in. He could see the concern in the young man's face. He gestured to the couch. "Sit. You are Altayr de Lupo, her dancing partner, si? I saw you dance with her, night before last," he sighed, sitting down beside Altayr. "Fantastico! But I would imagine you would rather hear the news of her than my rattling on."

"Gracias, but si I would hear how she is and what can I do for her?" Altayr answered.

"She has a concussion from him hitting her. Marco found her tied to the bed, gagged and bound. He freed her and helped her up and she seemed confused and could not keep her balance. She nearly fell down but thankfully, he caught her. She has a black eye - the cause of the concussion, I think. There don't seem to be any other bruises on her head. I had to sew up her eyebrow. The skin, she is very thin there on the brow, and it is not so bad as it looks. You let her rest. Give her cracked ice if she wakes thirsty tonight. If she gets a headache and it becomes worse, or seems confused, or her speech is strange, you call me and we will take her to the hospital. I think she will be okay though once she has rested. Try to feed her some soup tomorrow - weak tea. No coffee, soft drinks, or solid food until we see how she is doing. A little bit of bread or a few bisquits are alright if the soup is not enough. You can do all that?"

"Of course, I can," Altayr ran his hand through his hair. "Should I let her sleep until she wakes?"

"No. If she does not wake up before say - six in the morning, then you try to wake her. If she does not want to wake up. You call me as soon as possible. Si?!" The doctor pulled a card from his pocket and handed it to Altayr. "My personal number is on the back. I do this as a favor to my friend, Marco. Marco and Lucia think of Sancha like a daughter to them. Just keep an eye on her." The doctor sighed and patted his knee. "I am going home, Altayr. Take good care of her."

"I will...," he glanced down at the card, "Doctor Lopes. Thank you. Thank you so much for this."

He saw the doctor out and locked the door. What a night! He turned and headed for the bedroom, trying to push away the thoughts that were thronging in his mind. All that was important now was making Sancha better. He opened the door and walked softly over to the nightstand turning on the lamp and knelt down beside the bed. His breath caught in his throat as he beheld the damage done to her. It could have been worse, but it made him furious. Too bad he didn't unleash everything he had on that cur Diego! What a bastard, to hit her like that. He was angry, but he had to turn his head and let out a sharp breath to keep the tears from coming. Maybe it was just in that moment that he realized how much he cared about her.

Beautifully done! A fantastic portrait and her beauty shines through despite the black eye. The hair looks especially good. A sad story and unfortunately not very rare. Great work.

She's still pretty, even with that black eye~ Diego should be thankful the cops have him in custody; I bet that Altayr would have gone hunting him down after seeing what he did to her. Can't wait for the next installment =D excellent story and scene, my friend!

Awwwww..... Poor Sancha! No woman should ever have to deal with this, or be treated in this matter! She still looks beautiful, even after what she's had to endure.

I think Diego got off very lightly - he really deserves to have the living crap beat out of him!

Outstanding artwork and story, Ray!

I think Diego is not done with yet and as Owl says is lucky he is in custody tonight. As always your writing is detailed and gripping. It gives a very clear image of what is unfolding.
