You've definitely captured the desolate aspect here...Texture are fantastic!
Great idea for an image. Being up high looking down at the terrain is effective, especially with the tree positioned as it is. One suggestion: just for kicks, try to lighten the color of the terrain below. This might give you a better contrast for the tree and vegetation below.
