WINTER’S REASON
December … death month for another year
Yet blessed with manger dreams of days to come.
For those in winters of their lives more room
To pose the question “WHY?” No scriptures give
Us reasons other than the vanity
Of gods demanding adoration for
The glories of Creation . And of course
We people modestly respond with human traits;
Our logic, brilliant minds all come from God
Himself, Herself, Itself . FROM US FOOLS US!

Take heart! There’s still a wise men star in night
It’s not some messianic answer to all things,
IT’s Bethlehem’s bequest o love and gift
Of Christmas meanings more than tan lust
For shopping sprees. It is our choice to hope.

Flags.
Fodder.
Flax.
The old meanings of the Yule garlands in red, green and gold, and for me, that's always the meaning of the year's closing, the month that maintains its original name in defiance to Roman vanity that squeezed two extra months into the year so that two emperors could live forever. Not that I mind! Human stuff fascinates me and revisionist calendars are just as Human as anything else we create. This poem is a wonderful reminder of that, and a reminder that at times, often, and probably always, gods and other divine things are just reflections of ourselves. What better time, than at the end of the year, to reflect on that? It's also a great way to look at what we're doing and what we should be remembered for. This is a wonderful piece of writing. I'm glad I read it.
