It has been 51 years since the catastrophic disaster at the Hadron site on the Franco-Swiss border and all that time, xeno-radiation has been leaking into the world from the rift anomaly at Ground Zero of the Hadron Crater.
This has caused an unusual phenomenon: unpredictable, spontaneous Breaches in the fabric between dimensions. These Breaches always result in the appearance of at least one Rift Beast. At first, humanity was ill equipped to deal with these occurences, but they quickly adapted and, with the help Mordecai Universal Technologies and the enigmatic Institute, learned how to deal with the events.
The primary force responsible for the early detection of potential Breaches and the elimination of whatever comes through is the Interceptors, a civilian branch of the militarised R.C.F. Once on site, the Interceptors immobilise any Rift Beasts with high calibre gunfire before one of the unit closes with a Shinken and delivers the killing stroke.
It was discovered in the early encounters with these creatures that gunfire and ballistic attacks never do anything other than incapacitate them for a time before they regenerate. To truly kill a Rift Beast you have to close and strike with a melee weapon. The theory behind this is that the bio-energy field produced by a living being somehow "melds" with a weapon held in the hand and this allows a fatal reaction when striking a Rift Beast. Something akin to the ancient Samurai belief that the warrior's "soul" becomes one with the blade. True or not, the fact is that it works. As is about to be demonstrated in the image.
Phew! Sorry for all the script! Hope you didn't fall asleep reading it! Attempted a little post-work on this one to add wounds to the beastie and some cordite smoke on the rifles. Not 100% convinced that it worked but hey-ho. Anyway, thanks for looking and for all your comments and favs! I really appreciate it.
