In Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland the rare Pink-throated Twinspot hunts for seed and insects. While not threatened globally, the Twinspot is Near-threatened in South Africa and Swaziland, due to its small distribution range. Both habitat destruction and the cage-bird trade (an estimated 2000 birds are thought to be exported from Mozambique every year) are leading factors in its decline.

While both adults have distinctive white spots below the wings and chest, the males have pinkish throats, face and breasts with brown crowns. The females have grey-brown throats, breasts and bellies. Juveniles are brown above and pale grey below with no spots.

In Afrikaans, they are called “Rooskeelkolpensie”. The much rarer Pink-throated Twinspot is often mistaken for the Red-throated Twinspot (which has a crimson red marking in the male of the species).

Rendered in Vue 10i with minor postwork. Models: Pink-necked Twinspots (from Cool and Unusual Birds 3)

I can see it will be a must-have bundle! I prefer free to caged birds. If caged - only virtual birds in my computer!

Lovely! Now these I have not yet managed to see yet, as a somewhat lapsed twitcher in South Africa - I'm ashamed to say.

These are such lovely birds. The spots are so unusual. I have not started my conversion yet on this new volume. I look forward to it as I would Christmas. Thanks.
