I love the way light and shadow actually form textures here. There's definitely something hidden in this image...not like a distinct physical object, but a mood or a way of thinking. This is an excellent piece of work, especially since it's also in a kind of sepia-washed monochrome that really heightens the emotional intensity. WOW. A comment above compares this to the Shroud of Turin, and in a sense, I think this is as profound a piece of work, as that particular shroud is an artist's expression of devotion. THIS is (in my opinion) devotional as well...maybe not to some ancient, patriarchal god of the desert, but to something more human and complex. Needless to say this is also something that I really like.
