Waverley Abbey was the first Cistercian abbey in England, founded in 1128 by William Giffard, Bishop of Winchester.
By the end of the thirteenth century it was already declining in importance and was finally suppressed by Henry VIII in 1536.
This rather well ventilated building is all that remains.

Never heard about it. Thanks for your information, very helpful! Wonderful old architecture, even as a ruin!

Very interesting view of a fascinating ruin. Wouldn't the original builders be surprised to see how long their work has endured. Difficult shot well executed.

Astounding perspective...fantastic details! I love the feeling of this whole photograph, as if a strange, only partly-familiar world has opened up. Great sense of space and scale here, and yeah...since I'm a bug for color, I gotta say that the rich and subtle tones here keep me entranced. GREAT stuff!

Great POV and composition here. The ruins are lovely, but it makes me wonder how much lovlier the completed abbey was. Too bad Henry wanted a divorce.
