The Corvette Uruguay
THE ONLY SHIP SURVIVOR OF THE FLEET DE VINESHOOT TURNED 125 YEARS

The ship to it floats of bigger antiquity of the Armed Argentina it turned 125 years from their official incorporation in September of 1874. Last exponent of Sarmiento's legendary Squad, the corvette Uruguay intervened in revolutions, rescues and expeditions, and it was even floating headquarters of the Naval School. From 1967 it is National Historical Monument and as such a today it is exhibited in Port Timber.
The most outstanding, journalistic fact and politically, of all those that played the Corvette Uruguay, were the rescue of the doctor's scientific expedition Otto Nordenskjöld. Not less important other services that the Corvette lent to the Nation were while it remained in activity.
Its arrival to the country from Liverpool, in August of 1874, was designated by the revolutionary events that Mitre loosened and that they finished with the taking for the weapons of the Corvette, concluding the episode with the delivery from the same one to the loyal forces.
During 1877 and after the well-known episode as "the Mutiny of the Overcoats" of Zárate that affected the continuity of the studies in the incipient Naval School, this transferred their classes on board the Corvette Uruguay. In 1879 the Corvette, tied in Buenos Aires, was witness of the expenditure of the first promotion of official of the Naval School
In 1878 it was part of the squad that, commanded by the commodore Luis Py, he/she went to the cañadón of the Missionaries in Santa Cruz to affirm the national sovereignty in waters patagónicas. The date passed to the history like that of creation of the Fleet of Sea, besides being the first occasion in that he/she conformed to a force of tasks (according to the modern concept) integrated with a State bigger cocktail (Marina and Army).
