Subject: Outstanding Edit Poly Modifier Workshop Video

I was considering doing a video tutorial on the Edit Poly modifier, and how it's very useful in a flexible non-linear modeling workflow in the 3dsmax modifier stack, compared to simply modeling objects from the Editable Polygon base, in a linear modeling workflow.  The edit poly modifier can really help with a great many things when it comes to design presentation, animation, or simply creating an object with a non-linear modeling "history" that can be turned on or off at will.

However, luckily, before I went ahead making a lengthy tutorial, I came across this excellent presentation tutorial by Paul Fatkins showing many of the same techniques I was going to present.  I highly recommend watching this entire video, and learning how to use the edit poly modifier in a non-linear modeling workflow within the 3dsmax modifier stack.  This kind of workflow is extremely useful if you are interested in creating parametric models, with a very flexible modeling history.  Even if you're not interested in parametric modeling, learning to use the edit poly in this manner can really help you explore some new techniques, and expand the possibilities for modeling complex objects in 3dsmax.  It's a powerful workflow that may introduce you to some techniques that will save you some time or effort in your own model creation.

So I thought it might be helpful to share this video with the forum here.  Hopefully Paul doesn't mind.  All credit, of course, goes to Paul, who is a fantastic architect, and very good 3dsmax instructor.  It's an intermediate tutorial, so there is the assumption you already know the basics of modeling inside the 3dsmax environment, and have basic knowledge of the edit poly modifier.

Enjoy.

I should also mention, this video applies to any version of 3dsmax which supports the edit poly modifier.  So don't worry if you're still on an early version of the software, most of the techniques should still be valid.

I watched most of it, it's an hour long vid!  Great stuff though.  Dang, I'm really gonna miss this kind of interactive modelling once I make the switch to Blender.  If I come into some cash between now and next year, I might stick with Max, but I'm learning Blender now just in case.

Thanks, Lux, for the link.

Tools :  3dsmax 2015, Daz Studio 4.6, PoserPro 2012, Blender v2.74

Yeah, Paul knows his modifiers, obviously..  Maxxx, I added that Blender tutorial for David in the Blender forum too, if you wanna have a look.  I have no intention on moving from 3dsmax, unless I'm forced to in the future.  I'd miss the workflow too much.
